Default Key Fob Remote - Dead!

My two key fobs to an '04 RX-8 have died! I installed new batteries in them as they were getting weaker and harder to operate, but it only gave them a short life boost. Now with more new batteries in them, I get nothing.

I also tried a reprogram series of steps posted on another forum, turning the key on 3 times, pressing the door closure button 3 times, then the key fob button twice ... nothing seemed to work.

Has anyone ventured into replacing the sending unit in the car?

Man, I hope that doesn't happen to my switchblade fob. Let us know what you figure out.

Sounds like a dealer problem. I have one more year on my extended 6-year warranty (genuine Mazda warranty, bumper-to-bumper. The dealer says not many people buy it. Glad I did.)

Something I found while searching a CEL on my kids' Mazda3:

Quote:
Some vehicles may have difficulty programming keyless remote control
transmitters.

Before programming transmitters, ensure all domelights are set to the
"DOOR" position so that they are ON when the driver's door is opened.
Also, ensure the engine hood is closed.

NOTE: In some cases the door locks will not cycle up/down until key is
removed or door is closed after trying to enter program mode. If this
occurs, disconnect negative battery cable for 2 minutes. Then perform
transmitter programming as outlined in workshop manual or ESI.
It is written for Mazda3's but I would assume the programming is related.

^^ Damn, and here I've always tried programming fobs with the hood open. Silly me.

Seriously, good find, doc!

Interesting. I think my dome light is turned off.

It couldn't be that simple. Could it?

You probablay also have to do it on an odd-numbered-day, under a full moon, and have your left foot firmly on the gound, with a sprig of wolfsbane over your right ear, while a virgin dances naked in front of the car waving incense.

That should do it.

If you get the naked dancing virgin, I suggest you make a meet out of it. I'll swing by.

I was willing to try it just so I could see what a "sprig of wolfsbane" was, but the naked dancing virgin is good too.

As I hooked up the float charger tonight, I noticed that the range on my switchblabe key remote is down to about ten feet.

Any tips on changing the battery?
